Nestled deep in the asphalt sprawl of South Philadelphia is the Bok Building, an 80-year-old vocational school turned artist Eden. Closed in 2013 by the city’s School Reform Commission, the building has since undergone a remarkable transformation. It is on these storied steps that we meet Steve Whisler, one of many artisans and entrepreneurs who not only set up shop at Bok, but have become intimately engaged with the community surrounding it.
Amble far enough down Fisher Road in Worcester, PA and you’ll come upon a picturesque assemblage of rustic barns and wood sheds. The doors are all open, and a low hum emanates from within. As you peak through the entryway, you see the light catch swirling sawdust as Brad Smith and his associates sand, shape and slowly perfect solid wood seats, bed posts and more.
