Ceramicist Claire Parrish is based in Richmond, Virginia, a historic city with a vibrant and diverse artistic community.
Here, Claire creates distinctive and beautiful pottery that embodies her appreciation for pottery’s tradition and place in cultures around the world; her pottery’s organic forms and traditionally-inspired designs reflect in equal parts the natural world and the legacy of her chosen medium, one which arose from a synthesis of fine art and vital function.
An aspiring artist even as a child, Claire traces her artistic style and inspiration to her youth spent at her grandparents’ farm in rural Georgia, near her native Atlanta. Here, surrounded by her family, she first learned the importance of tradition and community, and the sense of place those values provide. Claire carried this awareness wherever she went; as early as high school, Claire traveled extensively, and as a college student at the University of Georgia, she studied in the Tuscany region of Italy. It was on her return from this formative experience—those months spent steeped in the region’s ancient art and rugged beauty—that Claire decided to pursue ceramics and sculpture. Now, she is devoted to crafting timeless, personal pieces that celebrate nature, history and community with each use and reuse they enjoy for generations to come.
