Traditionally trained bookbinder and self-taught leatherworker Kevin Sheby’s journey as a craftsman has taken him from one end of the country to the other.
He learned to love working with his hands as a student at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, an institution specializing in teaching fine craft skills. He then moved to North Long Beach, California where he now operates Half Light Bindery with the help of his wife and their cheerful, four-legged shop assistant.
Kevin makes the kind of items he wants to see in the world, using crossover techniques perfected in bookbinding. From billfold wallets to backpacks and more, Kevin crafts fine leather and canvas goods with extraordinary everyday significance—one at a time, at his workbench, by hand. Kevin sews all of the leather himself, with material sourced from one of the oldest tanneries on the continent. The hides are culled from North American steer and tanned exclusively in the USA, meaning each of Kevin’s products is an American original in the truest sense of the word.
