Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, Sydney Williams always had an interest in art and a strong connection to her southern roots.
It is no wonder that, after a few years in New England studying and pursuing a career in sustainable agriculture, Sydney made her way back to Asheville, North Carolina to cultivate her own creative talents and passion for making useful and beautiful ceramic pieces.
Sydney’s journey through her education, moving up and down the east coast and learning different ways of creative expression culminates in her current pursuits. Using the meditative wheel-throwing process, Sydney carefully creates simple, yet elegant vessels to enhance any quiet or mundane moment in the everyday. Her background in environmental studies adds to the story of her pieces: Sydney’s passion for sustaining our earth’s resources directly connects to both the way she makes her pieces and the impact that her pieces have on the user. Knowing that these pieces have come from clay, foraged from our earth to make reusable, sustainably produced objects continue to support her advocacy for our environment and protecting all that it has to offer us.
By mixing her own glazes, using unique techniques to achieve beautiful texture and sustainably sourcing three different types of clay to create her pieces, Sydney’s work truly celebrates the beauty of handmade. Holding one of her pieces in your hands, you can just feel the care and attention to detail that she has poured into just that one vessel. The colors, textures and form of the clay are a true delight to welcome into your everyday environment.
