Designer and handcraftsman Walter Cabal finds inspiration in poetry.
In studying the rhythm of language in his favorite passages, Walter learned the principles of purposeful, utilitarian construction, which are as true of a great stanza as they are of one of his unique leather creations. He also credits family and friends with teaching him critical crafting skills and takes cues from early Christian monks, who believed in the virtues of manual labor, spiritual development and slow living.
Walter was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the US with his family at the age of three. Today, he owns and operates Cabal Crafted, a small studio in the diverse and often-overlooked community of Pomona, California, east of LA. Sourced from three of the oldest and most-respected tanneries in the country, the leather he uses is vegetable tanned and designed to improve with age. From bags to basics, home goods and more, each piece Walter creates is meticulously handmade and hand stitched with the intention of re-dignifying manual human labor.
